Devon

  DOB unknown – March 31, 2005
Age approximately 7 years old.

Devon was a very beautiful horse that had a very painful past.  This horse resembled a woman who had been so abused she could no longer trust men.  Devon spent nearly two years with us, and in those two years we had tiny successes in breaking down her wall of mistrust, but she was so scared and nervous it was difficult to work with her.  She took a liking to Wayne, one of our committed volunteers, but she was very suspicious of anyone else that approached her.  In researching her past we found she started out in good homes, but soon became victim to a person with an angry temper. She spent about half of her life being abused and mishandled in that person’s care.  Then she was sold and transferred to at least five homes within one year, before she landed with us.  I was told she was dangerous, I think she was misunderstood.  To me this horse symbolized the tortured soul of an abused child, or an abused woman.  She died of colic (twisted gut) on March 31, 2005.  I will always remember this horse for as long as I live. She touched our lives, and I am grateful we were able to give her a safe, loving home for the last two years of her life.
